March-April 2005 |
The last days of Holy Week are sometimes referred to as the Triduum. They belong together in following from the Last Supper to the Resurrection. In recent years many Christian Churches have revived and revised the traditional ceremonies of Early Christianity. In France Maundy Thursday and Good Friday are referred to as Holy Thursday, and Holy Friday. The word Maundy adopted in England is based on a Latin word and refers to Jesus words, I give you a new commandment to Love one another as I have loved you.
This year we are adapting the service, to begin with the washing of the feet. During a simple meal which follows, the scriptures will be read, after which we will go to Chapel for the Eucharistic Prayer and Communion. Extra hosts will be consecrated to be used for Communion on Good Friday; they will rest on an Altar of Repose.
The Good Friday Service is divided into four parts. The Dramatic reading of the Gospel, the Proclamation of the Cross, the intercessions and the ministry of the Sacrament.
On Easter Sunday Morning we will use some of the Vigil Service and the Blessing of the Paschal Candle during the Eucharist. In the Early Church, Easter Sunday was the day when catechumens were baptised. They spent the night in prayer, with readings, the Service of Light, Intercessions and the Eucharist.
