Harvest Festival 2008

Sunday 5th October proved to be an ideal day, weather wise, for our Harvest Festival. After a rather cold September, October dawned bright and clear.

Fiesta

This year we had a Harvest Festival with a difference. The USPG (United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel offered ideas to Celebrate a Fiesta. The money raised to be sent to their project in Uruguay. This country which was until recently fairly prosperous fell on hard times and now there is much unemployment and poverty. USPG are working with the local community in various projects especially with children and handicapped and are giving opportunities to learn new skills.

Our Fiesta began in chapel with a congregation of about thirty people attending the Eucharist and singing enthusiastically their favourite Harvest Hymns. Some of the congregation are only in France for part of the year and are members of Choirs in their English congregations. So with the windows open we gave out neighbours the treat of hearing real hymns sung with great enthusiasm. Anyone who has attended a French village church will know what I mean!

We were grateful as ever to Lizzie who not only brought a beautiful flower arrangement but also led us meaningfully in prayers particularly focussed on Uruguay. The colourful array in chapel was enhanced by the dress of the congregation who were asked to wear bright colours and “Tutti Fruity” hats. A reminder of South America.

Peter Rost had just had a birthday so after the Service he regaled us with Champagne to go with our Tortilla Chips. Each family arrived bearing suitable Fiesta dishes. To name a few; American Beef stew, Chili con Carne, Banana cake South American apple crumble, and Salsa. Prizes were given for the best hats and between courses our Quiz master Stuart conducted a South American Quiz. Brian who had the advantage of having been to South America, won first prize.
